My work emerges from a sustained engagement with the landscape of the Algarve hinterland, where I live and work. Removed from the coastal intensity, this environment is both source and catalyst, an ever shifting terrain of light, growth, dryness and decay.

On my daily walks through nature, I inhale the landscape and return home brimming with new experiences. These inhaled impressions form my artistic path. The experience of the different seasons—the freshness and fullness of winter rivers and the heat of the summer with its drought—stand in stark contrast. The devastating effect of churning water, the dried-out, almost white-stained trees, but also the cheerful exuberance of spring, are my themes.

Rather than depicting specific landscapes, I search for the underlying features and what they mean for me. The paintings evolve through layering and abstraction. I translate these extremes and invite the viewer along with me and find their own experiences in the painting.
